Disrupting The Ancients

This drawing installation looks at the impacts on wildlife of biodiversity loss and climate change. This work came as a response to the after affects on the ecosystems, flora and fauna of Australia after the recent bushfires of 2020.

I seek to render the invisible forces that surround us and impact the natural order. The graphic punctured motifs surrounding the creatures represent scientific models of the mechanisms of biomass collapse.   The designs are rendered in fluorescent pencil, their dramatic color sends an alarm or warning signal. This piece represents a modern day natural history record of species and the networks and data sets of the threats that surround them. The blue paper symbolizes water and the reference to indigenous language are to honor the knowledge system of country that was in place before colonial Australia.

Australia has both a high rate of mammal extinction and a high rate of endemic species that are in isolated and fragile habitat distributions that I think most people are unaware of and that many of our iconic species even before the devastating fires of 2020 are in an extremely vulnerable state.
